The Early Morning Hour

Have you discovered the solitude of the early morning hour with your Lord?

The early morning hour is that time when the sun is just rising and everything is still and quiet.

Your heart is open and ready to hear from Jesus as He speaks to you in His Word.

You sit with an open Bible and pray, “Speak Lord, for Your servant is listening.” He has a feast waiting for you there in His Word – one verse after another filled with words rich in meaning and able to sink deeply into your soul – to comfort, encourage, quicken, convict, and change the way you think.

In the early morning hour, you answer the invitation from God in Isaiah 55:1-3 —

Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to Me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare. Give ear and come to Me; listen, that you may live.
Isaiah 55:1-3 NIV

When you spend quiet time with the Lord in the early morning hour, imagine you are sitting with Him at the most beautiful place you’ve ever been, and served the most incredible food you’ve ever eaten, and you are in the most delightful company you’ve ever enjoyed.

Jesus wants the early morning hour with you. He wants to spend time alone with you. He says, “Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends” (Revelation 3:20 NLT).

Jeremiah experienced this time with his Lord and enjoyed the delicacy of God’s Word. He said, “When I discovered Your words, I devoured them. They are my joy and my heart’s delight, for I bear Your name, O LORD God of Heaven’s Armies” (Jeremiah 15:16 NLT).

Jesus is our great example of quiet times in the early morning. He loved those early morning hours during busy days of ministry two thousand years ago: “In the early morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went away to a secluded place and was praying there” (Mark 1:35).

Oh how I love the early morning hour with my Lord! I can’t help but share this passion for being alone with Him, for He has fed my heart and ministered to my wounded soul a thousand times over when life crashes in on me. He has shared words in His Word that become new to me and a delight to my heart, filling me with joy and hope. I love to sit with Him alone, opening my Bible, and living in a passage of Scripture. I write out what I learn in The Quiet Time Journal or The Quiet Time Notebook, depending on how deep I go in the study of it for the day. I talk with the Lord about its meaning and how He wants to apply it to my life as He changes the way I think and transforms my life (see Romans 12:1-2 NLT).

I often grab my camera, my Bible, and Journal and go out in the desert to marvel at His creation, and capture a bit of the beauty of His handiwork through the lens. I see more clearly through the lens of my camera. Photography helps me slow down to gaze on the wonder of God’s glory. Sometimes, in those quiet moments, as the sun is rising, I stop and just worship my Lord with words of thanks, grateful for His grace in my life. And sometimes I clap my hands, giving Him a standing ovation for the amazing way that He paints the sky. And then, there are those times when tears flow from a heart aching for a touch of kindness and compassion, finally discovering merciful compassion at the source — the Lord Himself who knows the deepest places of our soul.

I remember this one morning, in particular, when I stood at the edge of the water, watching the sun begin to rise. All was still and quiet. And there in the middle of the water, on a small landing, was a snowy white egret, drinking in the solitude of the early morning hour. Look closely — it’s there.

Sometimes you will see things others never see in these peaceful quiet times — things, in fact, that sometimes only God sees, and desires to share with you.

So today, dear friend, may you enjoy the wonder and beauty of the early morning hour with your Lord.

God bless you dear friend, as you continue on in the great adventure of knowing Him.

♥ Blessings and Grace to You!
