Springs In The Valleys
Do you need some encouraging words as you find yourself in one of life’s valleys just now?
There is a great promise from God’s Word that brings hope in the valley.
In Isaiah 41:18, God speaks words of hope, grace, and mercy to His people in the midst of great loss and brokenness —
In these words we see that valleys can be the place of renewal and refreshment in the presence and power of the Lord. When God is at work, He takes the low places and brings out His amazing beauty and grace. The best thing any of us can do is stay close to the Lord, and draw even nearer to Him in the most difficult places. Your hope is in the Lord and certainly not in the things of the world. Corrie ten Boom used to say something that none of us should ever forget— God has no problems, only plans. As we stay close to the Lord, we will experience His promise, His eternal perspective, and His plan whatever we may be facing at the moment.
We were on our way out of Zion National Park, Utah, after an exhilarating time of photography on Nikon legend Bill Fortney’s His Light Workshops PhotoShoot Grand Circle Tour. I was sad to leave this incredible place as I had experienced such joy in shooting so many beautiful landscapes. We stopped at the bridge over the Virgin River. The light was just right and I hiked down to a place to capture this view of the trees with their vibrant colors and the mountains in the background. One thing you notice in Zion as in life is that the most growth occurs near the water, even in the valleys.
And so it is with us. Though we may be in the deepest, darkest valley of life, we may experience a unique growth and refreshment as we draw sustenance from the living water from our Lord. Jesus promised, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’ But this He spoke of the Spirit” (John 7:37-39). We have a constant flow of springs in the valley through the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit.
I have experienced so many springs in the valley as I have opened the pages of God’s Word and have been the recipient of the Holy Spirit’s encouragement and comfort through the words of Scripture. I always have a pencil in my hand and love to underline favorite phrases and verses on my pilgrimage with the Lord. I often write prayers and thoughts in the margins of my Bible. I have found this practice to help me interact with the Lord as I read His Word.
I have also found that daily Bible study helps me experience springs in the valley as I am intentional in staying close to the Lord in difficult times. If you find yourself in a valley right now and are finding it difficult to open the pages of the Bible, then you might want to grab a copy of Walk On Water Faith, my newest book of quiet times, and go on a journey Discovering Power In The Promises Of God. A special addition to this A Quiet Time Experience is the inclusion of photos from the myPhotoWalk journey through Zion National Park. This post’s featured image, Springs In The Valleys is presented in Week One, Day One on The Walk Of Faith, and is part of the myPhotoWalk Devotional Photography Portfolio available as custom prints at Catherine Martin — SmugMug.com.
So dear friend, draw near to God and He will draw near to you, and you will experience the power of His promise in Isaiah 41:18 — springs in the valleys.
