Living in the Vine

When you think about life, what is the first thing that comes to your mind? Is it people, possessions, or a Person?

Jesus is the way to real life. He is the source of life. He is your life.

Many years ago, Jesus’ words in John 14:6 won my heart. “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, but through Me.” Those words revealed the truth of how I could find and experience real and abundant life. They also showed me that I was going the wrong direction if I tried to find life anywhere else.

In the next chapter of John, Jesus continues to show us how to live. The Master Teacher gives us the picture of a vine and a vineyard. He says, “I am the True Vine, and my Father is the Vinedresser” (John 15:1 AMP). Then He continues by talking about the secrets of real life and how to have a fruitful life —

Dwell in Me, and I will dwell in you. [Live in Me, and I will live in you.] Just as no branch can bear fruit of itself without abiding in (being vitally united to) the vine, neither can you bear fruit unless you abide in Me. I am the Vine; you are the branches. Whoever lives in Me and I in him bears much (abundant) fruit. However, apart from Me [cut off from vital union with Me] you can do nothing.
John 15:4-5 AMP

I love these words especially in the Amplified version of the Bible because they talk about living in Christ. Truly we make our home in Christ and live with Him forever. These are words to always remember, especially when trials, troubles, and tests challenge our faith and tempt us to get distracted and discouraged. We can’t do anything without Christ. When we try to do things on our own, we fail miserably and literally step away from the source of everything we need in our circumstance. We need Jesus every moment of the day. When we are living in Him and staying vitally united to Him, then we simply turn our face to Him and talk with Him about everything. We don’t have to travel to see Him. He is here right now. He says, “Call to Me and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know” (Jeremiah 33:3).

I was in Temecula, California, driving past some of the vineyards, and out of the corner of my eye, I saw magnificent fall colors on the vines in one particular area. Of course, I had to pull over and shoot some photos of this amazing sight. I was particularly impressed with how many leaves, fruit, and majestic beauty could come out of just one vine.

Jesus is teaching us a powerful truth. If we will live in Him, we will bear much, abundant fruit. In fact, I would go so far as to say that when we stay close to Jesus and find our life in Him, our lives will bear more fruit and be more productive than we can even imagine.

So today, remember to live in Jesus. Keep your eyes fixed on Him. Call to Him every moment of the day. Walk with Him and talk with Him. And then watch to see all that He does in your life.
