The Great Light

Have you ever welcomed the moment the light was turned on in a dark room?

All of a sudden you could see your surroundings and move from one place to another, perhaps the origin of the saying that things “come to light.”

In life, you can experience such darkness that you, too, need the light turned on.

There is a “Great Light” for you today that brings such brilliance to your surroundings that you will see reality and gain a true perspective.

A fulfillment of the words of the prophet in Isaiah 9:2, we see the Great Light described in Matthew 4:16 —

The people who live in darkness have seen a great light, and for those living in the shadowland of death, light has dawned.
Matthew 4:16 HCSB

The Great Light described by Matthew and prophesied by Isaiah is Jesus Christ, Savior and Redeemer. He is Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, and Prince of Peace, according to Isaiah (9:6). He is the Light of the World and the light of heaven where there will no longer be any night or even need of sunlight because of His bright light (John 8:12, Revelation 22:5).

Do you need the great light of Jesus Christ today? Perhaps instead of living in His light you have been living in the darkness. Instead of seeing with His eternal perspective according to His truth, perhaps you have been believing lies. Maybe you think there is no hope for you. Maybe you think life is over. Maybe you feel no one loves you. Maybe you even believe things that aren’t true about God and you are living in despair and discouragement. If any of this describes your experience today, you are living in darkness, you’re experiencing a crisis of faith, and you need the Great Light of Jesus Christ. He shines brightly and if you will just turn your face to the light, you will once again see. As darkness is dispelled, truth certainly soon comes to light.

You also need to know that there is an enemy of the saints, the devil, who roams around and is named the “father of lies” (John 8:44). Lies are thrown at saints sometimes like flaming arrows by the evil one, according to Paul in Ephesians 6:16. Paul goes on to explain how you can be victorious in the face of spiritual warfare when you experience a flurry of fiery darts. He says —

In every situation take the shield of faith, and with it you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is God’s word.
Ephesians 6:16-17 HCSB

Dear friend, combine God’s Word with faith, and you will see as you have never seen before. The great light of Jesus Christ will fill your heart and your life, and you will be able to take that next step in your journey with Him. Choose to live in His light, not the shadowlands of darkness.

As I stood out in the desert and watched the sunrise casting light in a striking glitter on these massive clouds, as though washing across the sky and desert floor, I couldn’t help but think about the powerful light of Jesus. He washes through our mind, heart, and soul and takes us from darkness to light. So don’t despair, dear friend, if your faith has experienced a crisis due to loss or another type of trial. Turn your face to the Light again. Look at Jesus. Just look at Him and dwell in His presence. He knows your experience and your challenge and He is enough for whatever you face today. He has said, “Be courageous! I have conquered the world” (John 16:33). He Himself experienced the cross and emerged victorious. He will be your victory even today.

What better time to focus on the Great Light than Christmas, the celebration of the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. This Christmas, may you experience His light more brilliantly than ever before.

So turn your eyes upon Jesus, dear friend. Look full in His wonderful face. And the things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of His glory and grace.
