Growing In The Desert

Have you ever felt so thirsty that you were desperate for a cup of cool water?

Has your heart ever needed refreshing and you longed for some comfort and encouragement?

The Lord promises even in the deserts of life He can bring new growth.

Read and meditate on these words from the book of Isaiah —

The desert and the parched land will be glad; the wilderness will rejoice and blossom. Like the crocus, it will burst into bloom; it will rejoice greatly and shout for joy. The glory of Lebanon will be given to it, the splendor of Carmel and Sharon; they will see the glory of the LORD, the splendor of our God. Strengthen the feeble hands, steady the knees that give way; say to those with fearful hearts, “Be strong, do not fear, your God will come, He will come with vengeance; with divine retribution He will come to save you.” Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped. Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy. Water will gush forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert.
Isaiah 35:1-6

These words are ultimately fulfilled in Jesus and we are recipients of this growth in the desert and gladness in the parched land even now. For when the Lord is in our lives, through the power of the Holy Spirit, “rivers of living water” literally flow through our innermost being (John 7:37-39).

The impossible becomes possible in the Lord. The deepest darkest times of trial where your heart is shaken can become the very place where you experience the power and joy of the Lord the most. I know this by faith in God’s Word and personal experience walking with the Lord through many difficult times in life.

And yet, when my faith is tested again, even now, I still feel weak, and must again grab hold of God’s powerful promises in the deserts and parched lands of life. A test of faith isn’t truly a test unless your faith is really tested. I know that sounds obvious, but I have to remind myself of the need for faith, not sight, when my heart is broken and my spirit crushed. Grabbing hold of God’s promises, walking by faith, and trusting in the Lord, are the great secrets to growth in the desert. You will experience joy — the joy of the Lord — when you face the dry, parched lands of the desert.

I was out early one morning walking in the desert and taking photos of another beautiful sunrise. And I found this area of dry, parched ground and discovered, much to my surprise, this beautiful green plant growing up out of it. I knew that somehow it had found water and it grew.

When we find water, the living water of the Lord Jesus, we will grow too. We won’t just grow, we will “burst into bloom” as Isaiah 35:2 promises.

I believe we see the words of Isaiah ultimately fulfilled when we step into heaven and we are face to face with our Lord. When you read on in Isaiah 35 you see that “Only the redeemed will walk there, and the ransomed of the LORD will return. They will enter Zion with singing, everlasting joy will crown their heads. Gladness and joy will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing will flee away” (Isaiah 35:9-10).

So grow in the desert today, dear friend, and look forward to that day — one day soon — when God will wipe every tear from your eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old things will pass away and all things will be made new (Revelation 21:4-5). Oh I cannot wait for that day!
