Fanning Your Gifts Into Flame

Have you had times when you are weary in the midst of busy and flourishing ministry?

Paul knew about those times and gave his disciple, Timothy, some encouraging words for challenging moments in ministry.

Here are Paul’s words for weary disciples —

For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God.
2 Timothy 1:6-8 NIV

God has gifted you for the ministry He has called you to, whatever that may be. According to Paul, there are varieties of gifts, ministries, and effects given by the Spirit for the common good. (1 Corinthians 12:4-7). But in the course of ministry we will be challenged to slow down and sometimes even stop especially because of the suffering we will experience (see the words of Jesus in John 16:33). It’s one thing to step aside and refuel through time alone with God. We all need those times for effective ministry. But it’s quite another to grow weary, lose heart, and fall into despair and discouragement. In those difficult times, we need to apply God’s Word in 2 Timothy 1:6-8 to our own lives.

What Paul is telling Timothy when he challenges him to fan his gifts into flame is a reminder that there is within him the amazing power of the Holy Spirit. Empowered by the Spirit of God, we say, “I can’t, but He can.”

You will have challenging times, and they may be so daunting that you want to step back. Paul encourages you in those times to remember God’s Spirit lives in you, and instead of pulling back, step out and keep running your race with boldness, power, love, and self-discipline. You will be surprised to see the Lord do things in and through you that you thought were absolutely impossible.

So today, what is God asking of you? Pray and ask Him to fill you with the power of the Holy Spirit. Ask Him for wisdom in all you do and He will give you everything you need to carry out what He calls you to do in ministry.

Dear friend, fan your gifts into flame, and watch God work in powerful ways in and through you.

♥ Blessings and Grace to You!
