Faith in the Moment
I sat by the creek with fresh tears on my face.
I had just spoken at the memorial for the greatest hero of the faith I’ve ever known — my own precious mother.
And now, just three days later, it was Mother’s Day. My first without her presence on earth. I held the promises close to my heart — “To live is Christ and to die is gain” (Philippians 1:21-23) and we “prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord” (2 Corinthians 5:8).
I know my mother is face to face with the Lord and I truly rejoice that her joy is now complete. She has no more tears, no more pain, and is now in her eternal dwelling place (John 14:1-3). I also know the promise of Jesus: “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die” (John 11:25-27).
My mother was the greatest Christian I have ever known. She had a cross on the wall and looked at it every day to remind her of the faithfulness and grace of her Lord. She prayed the Lord’s Prayer every day, longing to know and experience the Lord every moment. She was now living those promises of Jesus in John 14:1-3 and John 11:25-27.
It is a bittersweet experience. Sweet in knowing my mother is at peace, alive and well, with the Lord in heaven. Bitter because I miss her.
So I went to my favorite place in Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona, Arizona, to sit alone with the Lord and pour out my heart.
I think we all need those places that are special and memorable — the places where we make significant decisions and commitments and resolves with the Lord. Sedona is the place where I have drawn near to the Lord many times and asked for faith in the moments where life has taken a turn and my heart is in need of His strength, grace, and mercy. It’s where I wrote Revive My Heart, filmed the Revive My Heart — M4V video messages, and shot the photographic stills for our new Quiet Time Ministries website.
So I sat by the creek and poured out my heart to the Lord.
As I opened the pages of God’s Word, I lingered in certain verses and passages that held great hope for me. And it was there in that place that I found faith in the moment, given graciously and surely by my Lord, who promises to give us what we need. He took me to Philippians 3:20-21 —
I love this promise because in it the Lord is reminding me that real life is found in those things that last forever. My home is in heaven and there is a glorious body awaiting when I see my Savior. I am a citizen of the heavenly city and it is my eternal home. My mother is there now. These promises are the rocks I stand on, firm in my faith, in the midst of a difficult and painful time.
Dear friend, maybe you are in a difficult and challenging time. I encourage you to find a quiet place, open the pages of God’s Word, and look for those promises you can stand on. You can count on the Lord’s faithfulness to give you grace and faith in the moment exactly when you need it. He promises.
♥ Blessings and Grace to You!
