Walking With God In The Desert

It was a dark day. Hope seemed elusive. The storms of life were relentless and strong.

So I decided to walk with God out in the Sonoran desert of Phoenix, Arizona, on this day. Somehow there is a greater ability to focus on the truth from God in His Word when you walk in the desert. I know this from personal experience and from testimonies of those who have loved and served God in the past.

I observe that God causes growth even in the deserts of life. Bushes are green even in the intense dry heat. God can give you strength and will provide for you even though you may have lost everything. He promises. Open His word and find those verses in the Bible that give you a strong, steady, and firm foundation. You surely need it in the difficult days. These are things you come to understand when you walk with God in the desert free from any distractions in the world.

Hope is possible in the deserts of life. Paul said, “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit” (Romans 15:13).

I am currently spending quiet time with the Lord in a study I wrote a number of years ago, A Heart That Hopes In God, presenting Truths from the Psalms to Anchor Your Soul. You may find great encouragement from these words —

Hope is an essential characteristic of the Christian and sets you apart from the world. It is elusive to one who does not know the Lord and unbelievers are left only with a querulous wishing or wanting something to happen … Biblical hope is the confidence that knows with certainty the facts, the reality, found in God’s Word. God alone gives hope, the ability to hold on to the truth in His Word, and watch for Him to do something only He can do. Biblical hope is really the highest form of faith—a steadfast certainty based on what God says in His Word … Hope looks for an answer from God, in His time and in His Way … You might think of hope as Holding On with Patient Expectation. It is not necessarily the expectation of what God is going to do, but that He is going to do something out of His great plan and purpose. There is always reason to hope because God never stops working in your life. He is never worried or wondering what He is going to do. Nothing is too great or impossible for Him to handle. And He does have a plan and a purpose.

So today, dear friend, take a walk with God in the desert. Pour out your heart to Him. And ask Him to fill you once again with hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.
