Finding Shelter In The Lord

Today is a day of encouragement for you to know that you always have a place of safety to run to in the midst of anything that comes against you.

You can find shelter in the Lord.

David, the man after God’s own heart, has become a great example to me in difficult times. I love living in his psalms. And recently, I have been living in Psalm 31.

In Psalm 31, David is honest to say he is feeling distressed, grieved, sorrowful, and weak. Ever felt that way? Have you ever been just overwhelmed with the enormity of your difficulty to the point of not being able to see past it?

Let me just say, dear friend, that in those times there is a great need for a change of perspective — getting above the difficulty and looking down on it from God’s perspective.

This is where we really learn a lesson from David. He was honest about his feelings, but instead of living in them, he poured them out to the Lord.

He cried out to the Lord. He told God what he was experiencing and how he felt. But he did not stop there. He then asked God for help, strength, deliverance, and salvation. He reviewed God’s promises — everything he knew to be true about God —

For You are my rock and my fortress; For Your name’s sake You will lead me and guide me. You will pull me out of the net which they have secretly laid for me, for You are my strength…And You have not given me over into the hand of the enemy; You have set my feet in a large place…How great is Your goodness, which You have stored up for those who fear You, which You have wrought for those who take refuge in You, before the sons of men! You hide them in the secret place of Your presence from the conspiracies of man; You keep them secretly in a shelter from the strife of tongues.
Psalm 31:3-4, 8, 19-20

I was exploring the Osher Rainforest at the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, California, USA, trying to capture an image of the beautiful blue Morpho butterflies. They were flying so fast and they just never seemed to stop. And then, I saw it — one Morpho butterfly resting on the side of a concrete wall, sheltered from all the potentially adverse elements of the rainforest — one resting butterfly in the midst of all the others fluttering in every direction. I thought, “We need to learn a lesson from this one resting butterfly finding shelter in the rainforest. We need to find our shelter in the Lord.”

When David found shelter in the Lord, he was able to say, “Blessed be the LORD, for He has made marvelous His lovingkindness to me in a besieged city” (Psalm 31:21). You will experience the love of God as you turn your faith away from your fears and rest them wholly on God and His promises in His word.

And so, dear friend, may you cry out to God today, ask Him for His help, and stand firmly on all He says in His Word, and experience His shelter and marvelous lovingkindness.

♥ Blessings and Grace to You!
