The Great Commandment
One of my heroes of the faith is Dr. Bill Bright, co-founder of Campus Crusade for Christ. Here was a man who was very successful in business, lived in California, attended First Presbyterian Church in Hollywood, became a Christian, began studying God’s Word, and six years later, together with his wife, Vonette, began a small organization called Campus Crusade For Christ that now has more than 25,000 full-time staff and over half a million volunteers in countries throughout the world.
I was privileged when I graduated from college to spend 4 years on the staff of Campus Crusade. And to become friends with Vonette Bright who has been a great encouragement to me in the writing of my books. One of my treasures is a book signed by both Vonette and Bill Bright. But there is something very special about the signature of Bill Bright. I will never forget it the first time I saw it. Under his name he wrote the two passages of scripture that drove him in ministry. 1 Corinthians 13 — the chapter on love and Matthew 28:18-20 the great commission.
You see, Bill Bright, who is now face to face with the Lord, understood the great commandment of ministry, the great commission of ministry, the great calling of ministry, and the great consequence of ministry. These are the truths that form the foundation of a heart for ministry.
