Reflections In The Mirror

Darkness began to fall quietly across the water, through the streets, softly changing the colors of the city to deeper hues, and bringing out the true old world quality of the city.

Florence, Italy. The beautiful diamond in the heart of the lush green rolling hillside of Tuscany.

I had walked through its streets all day and now I was standing along the wall next to the Arno River, sensing I would see something uniquely beautiful.

Twilight is the time of day between daylight and darkness. It’s also one of the golden hours for photographers. It’s the time of day when you will often see God paint the sky as only He can can.

And so I stood by the river and watched the sky light up with color in all directions. The best part of my time with the Lord was seeing the reflections of God’s handiwork in the smooth still water of the Arno.

A rare night of beauty. So many years ago and yet it seems only yesterday. The reflections of Florence in the water were like looking into a mirror. I could see all that was happening in the sky by looking into the quiet waters.

And so it is with us when we need to know and understand God’s eternal perspective of our lives, His plan and purpose, and His character and ways.

All we need to do is look into the mirror of God’s Word at the reflections He gives us. Paul helps us understand the importance of this mirror —

For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.
1 Corinthians 13:12 NIV

We need to become practiced at looking into the mirror of God’s Word. James tells us that we need to look intently and carefully into the mirror to be an effectual doer of the Word and experience blessing from the Lord (James 1:22-25).

God is always speaking — in His Word. Jeremiah, the Weeping Prophet, who lived in one of the most difficult periods of time in the history of Israel, found great comfort in God’s Word. He said, “When I discovered your words, I devoured them. They are my joy and my heart’s delight, for I bear Your name, O LORD God of Heaven’s Armies.” The Word of God will be your joy and delight as well when you discover it and devour it.

Maybe you are experiencing a seemingly impossible circumstance. And you might be thinking, “If only I could hear from God and know what He has to say and understand what He wants to speak into this difficulty.” All you need to do is look into His mirror, the Word of God. When you do, you will see reflections. His reflections are the reality He wants you to know. Reflections in God’s Word include promises that will tether your soul to God and fill you with hope in the face of any desperate situation.

The reflections in the mirror of God’s Word include the Lord Jesus Himself. Spurgeon speaks of Christ in his classic, Morning and Evening

We should always read Scripture in this light; we should consider the word to be as a mirror into which Christ looks down from heaven; and then we, looking into it, see his face reflected as in a glass—darkly, it is true, but still in such a way as to be a blessed preparation for seeing him as we shall see him face to face. This volume contains Jesus Christ’s letters to us, perfumed by his love. These pages are the garments of our King, and they all smell of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia. Scripture is the royal chariot in which Jesus rides, and it is paved with love for the daughters of Jerusalem. The Scriptures are the swaddling bands of the holy child Jesus; unroll them and you find your Saviour. The quintessence of the word of God is Christ.
Charles Spurgeon in Morning and Evening

One glimpse of Jesus and your heart will be soothed as you are held close to Him, protected in His everlasting arms.

So today, dear friend, will you stop for a few moments, and look into the mirror at the reflections of the Lord? He will show you the way and give you a clear vision for your life.

♥ Blessings and Grace to You!
