An Everlasting Rock

How can you trust God in difficult times?

There are those times when things are weighing heavy on your heart. And you have no answers for those things. You need to know that the answers are held firmly in place by the Lord your God. When everything is insecure and unstable, there is stability you can count on — the Lord, your everlasting Rock.

There is a stanza in a song of trust in Isaiah that goes like this —

The steadfast of mind You will keep in perfect peace, because he trusts in You. Trust in the LORD forever, for in GOD the LORD, we have an everlasting Rock.
Isaiah 26:3-4

Isaiah, the great prophet, lived in turbulent times. Security for Isaiah could only be found in the Lord. These words point out the reason for our trust. God the LORD is an everlasting Rock. That means He is your stability, security, provision, and comfort always and forever. He is the one firm Rock for you and for me.

Here’s the thing, though. He is the everlasting Rock. But we don’t always trust Him. Instead, we look to the world, earthly comforts, and other people and things as our security. The result is fear and anxiety. Why? Because those things are temporal and constantly changing. Therefore, our reliance is faulty, unstable and insecure.

So a shift needs to happen in our thoughts and in our actions. First, realize the Lord is your everlasting Rock. If you are afraid and worried, then ask yourself, “What am I relying on other than God?” Then, move your attention to God — who He is, what He does, and all that He says in His Word. We need to fill the landscape of our mind, heart and soul with the greatness of God. You will be amazed how peace begins to flow like a river into your heart. You will also experience firsthand the truth that David discovered, “Those who know Your name will put their trust in You” (Psalm 9:10). The more you know God, the more you will trust Him.

Be assured of this, dear friend. If you are in a crisis right now, you are being pulled into a deeper trust in God. Everything you know and believe about God profoundly surfaces in dark nights of the soul. And you will arrive at a new decision of devotion and discovery, opening the pages of God’s Word, and gaining a new and greater view of God. And the greater vision will result in a greater trust — just what you need to go on with Him as He leads and guides you.

Sometimes we wrestle in daring to draw near to God in the most difficult times of our life. I believe it’s a struggle of surrender — surrender of our view of things, our ideas of the answers to our situation, our feelings of fear and worry, our desire to walk by sight instead of faith, and wanting our timetable and plan instead of God’s timetable.

Alan Redpath speaks of the value of submission to God —

In my heart today, and in your heart, if there is submission to Christ, there is life from the throne of heaven which can enable you to live victoriously. All the strength that you will ever need, in every situation, is in the power of God the Holy Spirit.
Alan Redpath in The Making of a Man of God

So we just need to lay it all down before the Lord and draw near to Him with a new sense of wonder and awe. He is the everlasting Rock. You can count on Him. He will fill you with peace and power and give you everything you need for every circumstance of life.

So today, dear friend, be encouraged to know you have an everlasting Rock in the Lord your God. Trust in Him forever.

God bless you as you continue on in the great adventure of knowing Him.
