The Victory Parade
Have you ever had the opportunity to watch a parade?
I remember many years ago watching the Old Town Christmas Parade in San Diego, CA, with my husband. We loved it! And one of our great traditions has always been to spend the morning on New Year’s Day watching the Tournament of Roses Parade, enjoying a cinnamon roll, and sipping hot coffee. I love those times. There is something exciting about being in on the action and watching the next great float or marching band pass by.
Did you know that you are in a parade right now if you are a Christian and personally know the Lord Jesus Christ?
The apostle Paul reminded the Corinthian church that they were not alone, but were part of a huge gathering of believers who were in a triumphal procession, a victory parade, led by God through union with the Lord Jesus Christ. Here’s how Charles Williams puts it in his translation of 2 Corinthians 2:14 —
As we think about our union with Christ and the “triumphal train,” imagine a parade.
“In the Messiah, in Christ, God leads us from place to place in one perpetual victory parade. Through us, he brings knowledge of Christ. Everywhere we go, people breathe in the exquisite fragrance. Because of Christ, we give off a sweet scent rising to God, which is recognized by those on the way of salvation—an aroma redolent with life” (2 Corinthians 2:14-15 MSG).
I was watching this peacock strut around, with head held high, at the Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium, and Safari Park in Litchfield Park, Arizona. I followed it everywhere with my Nikon D7000 camera and Nikkor 80-400mm lens, capturing every pose imaginable. This amazing creature was out in the open, walking freely, and was leading me all over the zoo. And then I saw this image through the lens. The feathers flowed from behind its crowned head like a beautiful train. And I stopped just to experience this moment of beauty, capturing it with the camera.
There is no one more beautiful than Jesus Christ. And He is leading us in life in a triumphal procession, a victory parade. He is Victor. And though we may experience many trials, ultimately, we will pass through the darkness into the light of heaven and eternal life. The victory was accomplished on the cross. Our sins, through Christ, may be forgiven because He paid the penalty for them with His very life. We are made righteous through Him. We are redeemed, justified, sanctified, and ultimately, glorified in Christ (1 Corinthians 1:30).
The story is told of Corrie ten Boom, while imprisoned at Ravensbruck concentration camp during World War II, encouraging other prisoners with the message of God’s Word. She heard that 250 younger, stronger Dutch prisoners were being transported to a distant factory. Their destination was unknown, and most importantly, their return was uncertain. In the middle of the night, Corrie went to the washroom, climbed out the window, and positioned herself in the darkness where she was certain the prisoners would pass. She prayed, “Lord, give me some word for them.” As each one passed, she whispered: “Jesus is Victor.” She continued, “Fear not, only believe. Underneath are the everlasting arms.” They responded, “Thank you, Corrie. God bless you.” Corrie later told Betsie, “The Holy Spirit gave me a short message for each one.”
Who needs the fragrant aroma of Christ in and through your life today? All you are experiencing is not without purpose. God has a plan. And you are in a triumphal procession in union with Christ.
So dear friend, always remember, you are not alone. Jesus is leading you and guiding you in life. And He is Victor. He is making a difference in and through you, and touching the lives of others all along the way. So today, enjoy the parade!
