Hope For Weary Souls

On a recent myPhotoWalk photo shoot, I remember looking into the face of this bear and thinking, “Now that’s one tired bear!”

Just look at those sleepy eyes — this is a bear that appears to have no plans of moving for the next hundred years!

Maybe you are feeling the way this bear looks. Your weariness and fatigue is more than just skin deep — it’s all the way to your heart and soul.

Well, I have encouraging words from your Lord for you today. The Lord knows you and keeps watch over you (Psalm 121:5).

I have been thinking about the words in Psalm 33:18-20 —

The LORD watches over those who fear Him, those who rely on His unfailing love. He rescues them from death and keeps them alive in times of famine. We put our hope in the LORD. He is our help and our shield.
Psalm 33:18-20 NLT

I love how George O. Wood explains this verse in his most excellent book on the Psalms —

Nothing escapes His notice, including my own thought life. I can hide nothing from Him. He has access to everything. He reads my heart. He watches over me. There are really two kinds of observation: the teacher who watches over the student to ensure he does not cheat, and the father who watches his child on the beach to make sure she doesn’t get in too deep. It is this second manner of watching that attracts the Psalmist’s praise.
George O. Wood, A Psalm In Your Heart

The Lord is faithful to call you to a place of rest when your soul is weary. He knows you need it and invites you to a special time with Him.

Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you. Let Me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30).

Don’t you love His invitation, especially if you suffer from a weary soul! I especially love these verses in The Message —

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me — watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill–fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”
Matthew 11:28-30 MSG

Will you answer the Lord’s call to rest today?

Maybe it will mean grabbing a book, finding a quiet corner in a coffee shop, and taking an hour to read. Or it might take scheduling a morning to go to a park and just sit alone with the Lord, reading your Bible and writing in your journal.

So dear friend, find hope today in knowing that the Lord keeps watch over your soul, and answer His invitation to get away with Him and find some rest. Your heart and soul will thank you for saying yes to the Lord.

♥ Blessings and Grace to You!
