When God Broadens Your Vision
How do you see your life?
According to your pain and problems, or according to God’s power and plan?
Sometimes our vision is severely limited and we cannot see beyond the pain of a deep loss or the impossibility of a difficult situation. And when we only see the problems and the pain, we are not seeing everything there is. We feel as though there is nothing else, and we can easily fall into discouragement and despair.
But somewhere along the way, God breaks through our pain and problems, and urges us onward to see beyond ourselves to His glory and greatness. He usually does it by showing us truth in His Word.
There is a verse in the Bible that I have known for many years, but it has taken on new meaning for me in recent days —
Something important stands out to me in this verse about God and about me. There are things that God can do that have not come to my mind or ever entered any of my prayers. That means there is more to see and know about God than I know right now.
And so, my vision needs to be broadened. And that is exactly what the Lord does, especially when dreams are shattered and our hearts are broken. God takes us beyond ourselves into a greater realm – the eternal – and we become new, stronger, more steadfast, more deeply intimate with Him, filled with hope and peace, and carried onward and upward into God’s eternal purpose and plan for our lives.
I was recently in Phoenix, Arizona, for a Logos Bible Software conference. The first night I saw this tree in a parking lot and noticed the beautiful colors of the sunset growing deeper with each passing moment. The sunset was especially beautiful when viewed through the silhouette of the branches of this tree.
And that is how it is for us in life. Imagine that our lives with the knowledge and experience we have is like this tree. And if all we see is the tree, then our vision is severely limited. Look at the beauty of the tree when held against the backdrop of the desert sunset. The tree looks different. And the beauty makes the entire landscape feel different.
The beauty of the Lord, and who He is and what He does, changes us. In time, He carries us on to a new place and season in our lives. When we are in valleys in our lives, at specific points in time along the way, He will broaden our vision with His Word.
I share this to encourage any who may be in a dark valley just now not to give up. Give God time. And know, with great certainty, that there are more chapters to your story. And all your life is, as C.S. Lewis said, only the cover and title page to the great story of heaven and eternity, where every chapter is better than the one before.
