The Power Of Patterns

myPhotoWalk — Photo Tech Talk

You see what you know. And one of the most important aspects of photography is to appreciate the power of patterns.

Over time, and many photo shoots, I have begun to appreciate the importance of think–ahead composition when I’m out in the field with my camera. I notice the light on a subject, especially how it dances and creates highlights and reflections. And I see all sorts of patterns with lines and shapes. It’s almost as though I am viewing the field of composition in black and white while searching for the hidden design. God’s design.

Landscape photography, Jack Dykinga, describes how he sees this way —

I don’t think that everybody sees the same way. Personally, I always see in terms of texture and design and light. For me, the movie’s running all the time. Almost no matter what I’m looking at, I’m composing it.
Jack Dykinga

I was walking through a beautiful park with some photographers. They were hurrying on to the next exhibit. I was the slowest in the group because I was constantly stopping to take images of things I was seeing along the way. And when I walked past this green bush, I didn’t just see a bunch of plants in the ground. I saw a magnificent work of art, created by God Himself, with incredible patterns, texture and color. I just couldn’t resist capturing the image. It was so beautiful to me. I could see it hanging on a wall.

Patterns have such power to draw the eye to majesty of God. Only God can create something with order and beauty out of nothing. I notice patterns in the sand out in the desert where I live. I see patterns in the clouds, especially as the sun is going down, casting a pink glow all across the sky. I see patterns in the branches of what some would call a dead tree, making it appear lifelike, beautiful, and interesting. Everywhere I look I see the beauty of patterns and I love capturing images to help others see them too.

So, the next time you go outside to shoot some images, take a few moments and look for patterns. You will capture some beautiful photographs as a result.

You can see more of the beautiful patterns in God’s creation in my first myPhotoWalk full color devotional photography book, myPhotoWalk — Quiet Time Moments, daily devotions and devotional photography everyday, just released in multiple print and ebook formats. The cover image, Paradise, was chosen from the myPhotoWalk San Francisco Gallery at our myPhotoWalk—Smugmug Portfolio.
