The Best Is Yet To Come

And they lived happily ever after.

Those are the words that end every good fairy tale.

The things is, those are fairy tales. What about real life?

For all who are saved by grace through faith because of the blessed act of mercy by God through the death of His Son, Jesus Christ, on the cross, and the resurrection life now lived, there is a happy ending to the story of your life. Or maybe the better way to put it would be that there is a happy beginning. Eternal life experienced in heaven is the beginning of the rest of the story — the amazing truth that “we will be with the Lord forever” (1 Thessalonians 4:17 NIV).

This truth is more of an encouragement to me now than ever before. Paul teaches us that when we are absent from the body, we are at home with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:8). So many who are so dear to my heart are now with the Lord, face to face. That makes heaven shine more brightly to me. And what a blessing and comfort for me to know my dear beloveds are at home with the Lord. I can’t wait until I can be with the Lord, face to face, and finally home.

So I am thinking there is going to be quite the party in heaven. If God can make clouds dance in full living color across the sky in the desert on an ordinary morning, just imagine what will happen as His glory shines in bright array in heaven.

The Lord gave John a vision of it while he was exiled on the isle of Patmos —

They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign forever and ever.
Revelation 22:4-5 NIV

We learn in Revelation that there is going to be a wedding and we are the “beautifully dressed bride” (Revelation 21:2). There is going to be “the wedding supper of the Lamb” (Revelation 19:9). God will wipe every tear from our eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain (Revelation 21:4).

I think this is only a glimpse into glory, a faint view through a mirror, as Paul so eloquently puts it (1 Corinthians 13:12).

But even the glimpse is enough to know that the best is yet to come.

I love the wisdom of Octavius Winslow, who helps us in knowing how to view our eternal life in heaven from the temporal place we live right now —

Retracing all the way your God led you through the wilderness, you will gather material from each mercy and from each trial, from each joy and from each sorrow, for an eternal hymn of praise to His great and glorious name. Beloved, you are learning these songs now in the house of your pilgrimage. As you cross the desert sands, or break your lone footsteps through the depth of the wilderness, or stand within the sacred shadow of the cross, God is preparing you for the music-mansion of glory. All his dealings with you in providence and in grace are but to train and attune the powers, affections, and sympathies of your soul to the sweet harmony of the spheres…A harp of gold strung by angels and attuned by Christ’s own hands awaits you in the music-mansion above, and soon you will sweep its chords to the high praises of the triune Jehovah and all heaven will ring with its melody.
Octavius Winslow in Help Heavenward

Oh, don’t you love those words. As Spurgeon has said, “Let your glance flash forward to the future eternity, the mercies which shall be yours even here on earth, and the glories which are stored up for you beyond the skies.”

Oh yes, dear friend, the best is yet to come.

♥ Blessings and Grace to You!
