All Things Work Together

All things work together for good.

Yes, they do.

Really.

When you love God and are called according to His purpose, amazing things happen in God’s time and in His way.

God promises.

He is the One who weaves everything together. The good, the bad, and yes, the ugly.

Romans 8:28 is like a bright flickering diamond in the theological treatise Paul wrote to the church at Rome —

And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.
Romans 8:28

I have thought about this verse many times over the last three years. I don’t understand why some things happen nor do I know the future. But I do know the God who holds the future in His hands. And I trust Him. I do. I am trusting Him that He is the Master Weaver and Architect, and paints beauty and glory into the landscape of our lives according to His magnificent plans and purposes.

I look at the delicate lines of this beautiful lily — how the folds of the petals meet to make an amazing one-of-a-kind flower. Everything works together in this flower to produce a thing of beauty. And are we not more than this to our Lord – we are His sons and daughters in the family of God. If He can produce such beauty and color and intricacy in one of thousands of flowers, then I know without a doubt He is working everything together. And I don’t need to know how He is doing it. I trust He is. He promises. Total Reliance Under Stress and Trial. That’s trust.

Corrie ten Boom, one of my heroes of the faith, used to quote these words as she relied on her Lord in her own worse case scenarios in life —

My life is but a weaving
Between my God and me.
I cannot choose the colors
He weaveth steadily.

Oft’ times He weaveth sorrow;
And I in foolish pride
Forget He sees the upper
And I the underside.

Not ’til the loom is silent
And the shuttles cease to fly
Will God unroll the canvas
And reveal the reason why.

The dark threads are as needful
In the weaver’s skillful hand
As the threads of gold and silver
In the pattern He has planned

He knows, He loves, He cares;
Nothing this truth can dim.
He gives the very best to those
Who leave the choice to Him.

Romans 8:28

You know, I think so often about Corrie ten Boom and all the suffering and loss she endured in her life. But I don’t stop there when I think about her. I also think about her intimacy with the Lord Jesus and her trust in Him. And that’s what counts — knowing and loving our Lord. He leads as we lean into His embrace and tells a story, His story, through our lives. It’s all about intimacy with Him, what I call, a radical intimacy. Jesus said, “This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent” (John 17:3).

God is working everything together into something that will give Him great glory. I read this recently in Streams in the Desert

It is a beautiful blending. Many different colors, in themselves raw and unsightly, are required in order to weave the harmonious pattern. Many separate tones and notes of music, even discords and dissonances, are required to make up the harmonious anthem. Many separate wheels and joints are required to make the piece of machinery. Take a thread separately, or a note separately, or a wheel or a tooth of a wheel separately, and there may be neither use nor beauty discernible. But complete the web, combine the notes, put together the separate parts of steel and iron, and you see how perfect and symmetrical is the result.
Mrs. Charles Cowman in Streams in the Desert

Oh yes, dear friend, God is at work. And He is working everything together in your life and mine for good. So let’s ask Him for a huge dose of trust today, as we walk by faith not by sight. Keep drawing near to Him that you might know and love Him more. That IS what life is all about.

God bless you as you continue on in the great adventure of knowing Him.

♥ Blessings and Grace to You!
