myPhotoWalk On The Wild Side

*** myPhotoWalk — Photo Tech Talk ***

One of my favorite things on a myPhotoWalk adventure with my Sony A6000 camera is to capture unique photos of wildlife. I think of it as “myPhotoWalk on the wild side.”

I especially love bird photography! I am always on the watch for snowy white egrets, great white herons, black-crowned night herons, or blue herons. These are large regal birds, usually hovering territorial in nature, over their chosen lake or pond, looking for breakfast. They don’t spook easily, but caution is necessary or you’ll lose the shot.

On this particular walk, I happened upon a great white heron hanging out by a nearby lake. I had my Sony A6000 with me, so I immediately stopped, and zoomed in to 70mm on my Zeiss lens and captured some shots. Since 70mm was the best I had for focal length, I knew I needed to get closer. I’ve discovered that is not so easy with birds, especially the great white herons. They have their eye on you long before you see them. And they will fly in one short second at any movement that scares them. So I’ve learned you have to move slowly to get in a better position. I took my time and moved closer, a little at a time. Finally, I got as close as I thought was possible, given this great white heron’s tendency to fly fast and furious. Then I composed the shot with the reflections on the water as the background to set off the beauty of its long neck and regal stance.

I love this safari style bird photography. Every bird is so unique and beautiful. They vary in color, size, and gesture. I have learned a lot about shooting photos of birds by going to local parks and zoos and practicing with different lenses. I usually shoot with the largest aperture possible and continuous high to capture as many frames as possible. A monopod is helpful, but if I am out walking, I just carry my little Sony A6000 and shoot handheld.

So the next time you’re out walking, take a photowalk on the wild side with your camera, and look for some wildlife, especially birds. They’re everywhere.

♥ Blessings and Grace to You!
