Going Soft With A Cool Lens
*** myPhotoWalk — Photo Tech Talk ***
Over the last year I have made a point to focus on clarity and tack sharp crispness in my photos. I’ve spent a lot of time learning proper exposure to really nail a clear image with my camera.
Well, now I’m actually going soft with a really cool new lens — the Lensbaby Velvet 56. I first learned about this lens from one of my favorite flower photographers, Kathleen Clemons. She has been called the Georgia O’Keefe of flower photography. When I saw the amazing photos she took with the Velvet 56, I couldn’t wait to use it in my own photography.
Two weeks ago, the Velvet 56 arrived. I excitedly opened it and then read how to use it. Lensbaby makes specialized lenses that allow you to manually use selective focus to highlight areas of the subject in your photo. But the Velvet 56 takes it one step further and adds this beautiful, soft, velvety bokeh that increases as you open up the aperture.
Once I put the Velvet 56 on my Nikon D810, I then experienced the new challenge of working with manual focus combined with different apertures. I still was able to shoot in aperture priority, allowing my Nikon D810 to choose the shutter speed. But now I began the adventure of learning what the different apertures produce in terms of soft focus and blur.
At first, I couldn’t seem to get the hang of it. I was shooting stopped down to f/16 to get everything in focus. None of my photos seemed like anything special. Then I decided to move the aperture setting to f/2 as I focused in on this cactus. I loved the beautiful velvety soft glow around the needles. Now I was beginning to see the creative things that are possible with the Velvet 56.
So once I created this image, I was off and running with selective focus and the new creative view of going soft with flowers, reeds, and cactus on the desert floor. I’m so excited about this new lens and can’t wait to learn even more with it out in the field.
So, if you are wanting to do something new in photography, I encourage you to check out the Lensbaby Velvet 56 and try going soft and ethereal with your photography.
♥ Blessings and Grace to You!
