God Has A Reason

On a myPhotoWalk early one morning in the California desert where I live, I came upon a rainbow showcased from within the storm clouds.

Thankfully, I had my Sony A6000, Zeiss 16-70mm camera with me and I quickly captured an image.

As I continued walking, I thought about that glorious rainbow. Some would say a rainbow is simply caused by reflection, refraction, and dispersion of light in water droplets resulting in a spectrum of light appearing in the sky — merely a phenomenon of natural physics.

But those who have read God’s Word in the Bible know that there is a reason behind the rainbow. It’s something from God to show us His promise never to send a flood to destroy all life on earth as He did in the days of Noah —

Then God said, “I am giving you a sign of my covenant with you and with all living creatures, for all generations to come. I have placed my rainbow in the clouds. It is the sign of my covenant with you and with all the earth. When I send clouds over the earth, the rainbow will appear in the clouds, and I will remember my covenant with you and with all living creatures. Never again will the floodwaters destroy all life. When I see the rainbow in the clouds, I will remember the eternal covenant between God and every living creature on earth.” Then God said to Noah, “Yes, this rainbow is the sign of the covenant I am confirming with all the creatures on earth.”
Genesis 9:12-17

God has a reason for the rainbow. And behind that truth is an even greater truth about God. He is sovereign. This means all things are under the rule and control of God. He works all things after the counsel of His will according to His plan (Ephesians 1:11). There are no maverick molecules. God has a plan and He carries it out to the very smallest details (Isaiah 46:11).

God’s sovereignty is something I have to remind myself of daily and even moment by moment. Why? Because when things happen in ways I had not planned I can think things that are not true. We have to ask ourselves: What stories am I believing that are contrary to what God says in His Word? For example, maybe I can think that because things seem to have gone awry or are falling apart, that God no longer has a plan or no longer loves me. But His Word says that His ways are higher than my ways (Isaiah 55:9) and that He loves me with an everlasting love (Jeremiah 31:3). We also know that with God there is always a future and a hope (Jeremiah 29:11) and that He causes all things to work together for good (Romans 8:28).

The life of Joseph offers a deeper understanding of God’s sovereignty. Joseph’s brothers decided behind his back and without his knowledge to alter the course of his life and sell him into slavery. As a result, he no longer had the comfort and security of living with his family, and ultimately was sent to jail through no fault of his own. But God had a plan for Joseph and no decision of man could thwart His purpose. Joseph ultimately was given a high position in Egypt, second only to Pharaoh. And Joseph’s earthly family ended up receiving care and favor from Joseph during a famine in the land.

Joseph’s words to his brothers give us the lesson from God’s eternal perspective. Joseph said, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people” (Genesis 50:20 NLT).

The decisions and acts of man always play into the hand of God and His ways and purposes. God is at work in our lives all the time and that means He has a reason even if you don’t understand.

So what can you do in the midst of the storm clouds of adversity and trial? The best advice comes from God Himself —

Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take.
Proverbs 3:5-6 NLT

Always remember, dear friend, that God has a reason. He is sovereign and He loves you. So trust in Him today even if you don’t understand. In His time and in His way, He will open your eyes to His eternal perspective, and you will see His plan unfold.

♥ Blessings and Grace to You!
