There are times in life when God surprises you with something amazing that delights your heart.
It was just a month ago that I reached down to inspect a beautiful striped feather resting on some rocks in our small back yard. I heard a rustle of palm branches. And then, I sensed I was being watched. I stood and looked up into our palm tree and there it was—a great horned owl staring straight at me. I was stunned, thrilled, blown away, and about a thousand other emotions. I backed slowly away, ran into the house, grabbed my Nikon D810, my 80-400mm lens, and my tripod. Then I crept silently back out under the palm, set up my camera, and began capturing images. Over the next few days, I had captured more than a thousand images. A bit extreme, I know, but I was soon rewarded. The one owl was joined by another. I just could not believe my eyes. Those owls stayed for almost a week. And I enjoyed the whole adventure as a total gift from God.
So in processing this image I simply sharpened it and applied a vignette, a simple solution to photo artistry. This is how I saw this owl in real life. And then, I decided to highlight wisdom and Psalm 9:10—”The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.” I always think of the “wise old owl” probably because of the nursery rhyme written to teach children about wisdom. Per Quora, “In many other cultures, owls represent wisdom and knowledge because their nocturnal vigilance is associated with that of the studious scholar or wise elder (Saunders 1995). According to one Christian tradition, owls represent the wisdom of Christ, which appeared amid the darkness of the unconverted (Saunders 1995).”
So, dear friends, always fear the Lord because it will lead to wisdom. And when you want to be wise, think of this great horned owl, sitting peacefully behind the swaying fronds of the palm tree.
