A Hall Of Fame Leader
When I was a little girl I wanted to be a baseball player. Don’t laugh, I was good. I just loved baseball thanks to my mother who took us to Spring Training in my hometown of Phoenix each year. I got to watch Willie Mays play baseball and I even got his autograph!
One of the greatest honors awarded a professional baseball player is election to the National Baseball Hall of Fame. And of course, my favorite player, Willie Mays, was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1979. He was a two–time National League MVP, a 20–time All Star, and led the league in home runs four times.
Did you know that there is a Hall of Fame of faith in the Bible? It can be found in Hebrews 11. And one of my favorite heroes of the faith, Moses, is found there.
What does it take to be someone like Moses, a Hall of Fame leader? Moses, according to Numbers 12:3, was “very humble, more than any man on the face of the earth.” It means he regarded others as more important than himself. What a quality for the one God chose to lead His people out of Egypt, across the Red Sea, and through the barren, dry wilderness.
When God called Moses to this great task of being His leader, Moses was very afraid and tried to say no. Basically he asked God to send someone else. He did not want to do it.
Here’s the beauty of Moses. He was not fearless, but he was faithful. According to Hebrews 11:26 he “thought it was better to suffer for the sake of Christ than to own the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking ahead to his great reward.” He “endured, as seeing Him who is unseen” (Hebrews 11:27).
Moses prayed big prayers that delighted God. “Let me know Your ways that I may know You” (Exodus 33:13) and “Show me Your glory” (Exodus 33:18).
What was Moses’ secret? He was a man who met God and became a man of faith. You too, will become a person of faith when you draw near and meet God.
Oh yes, Moses had many obstacles, but overcame them all because He knew God. Knowing God is the secret to becoming a Hall of Fame Leader. According to Psalm 9:10 those who know their God will trust in Him.
I encourage you to take some time and read through Hebrew 11 and stop at each portrait of Hall of Fame Leaders. You will see that each lived by faith in their lifetime. You too, can become a Hall of Fame leader as you “walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7). You may be weak and afraid, like Moses. But when you draw near and meet your God, you will be filled with His power and become a faithful servant and leader. And God will be glorified as a result.
There is a very special church in Sedona that I love visiting. It’s called The Chapel of the Holy Cross. It’s built into one of the immense red rocks and what stands out is the cross. That cross makes me think of Jesus. Jesus is the great example for us as a Hall of Fame leader. According to Philippians 2:8 “He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” If we want to know how to live and how to lead, all we need to do is look at Jesus and follow Him. In fact, He invites us to a life of service and leadership when He says, “Follow Me and I will make you fishers of men” (Matthew 4:19).
So dear friend, fix your eyes on Jesus and learn from the example of Moses. Become a man or woman who meets with the Lord, knows and loves Him, lives by faith, and becomes a faithful servant and leader.
God bless you dear friend in this great adventure of knowing Him.
