One Holy Passion OLS — Week Seven

The day was clear and bright in Sedona, Arizona — one of those picture postcard days you live for as a photographer. My husband and I sauntered along the Cathedral Rock Trail, cameras in hand, enjoying the eternal wonder that is Cathedral Rock.

The Cathedral Rock trailhead off Hwy-179, just East of the sinuous Oak Creek, can be accessed off of Back’O’Beyond Road. The trail ends with a short steep climb to Cathedral Rock itself. And when we first saw this beautiful red rock formation, perhaps the most photographed image in Arizona after the Grand Canyon, we just stopped to admire its beauty.

That same moment occurs when God gives us a glimpse of His heart. We stop in awe of Him and the fact that He has drawn near.

James wrote about this experience that we can know firsthand for ourselves: “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you” (James 4:8).

This invitation is open for you at all times. You are invited to take a journey to the heart of God.

And we experienced a bit of this journey in Week 7 in One Holy Passion. We explored the grace of God as well as the discipline of His people. We also spent a day looking at the intimate, face to face relationship Moses had with God. We saw how much God desires our singular love and commitment, and that He is a Jealous God, asking that we have no rival love. And finally, we learned that God has service for us as we live with Him each day.

Through all of these days of study, I was led deeper into God’s amazing love. I couldn’t help but be absolutely overwhelmed with the fact that God has opened Himself up to us. He has chosen to allow us to be intimate with Him. That in itself is astounding. After all, He is God, the Creator of the universe. He is wholly other and does not need to be so transparent in His revelation. And yet, He is all love. And more than that, He loves you and me. Think on that truth for awhile.

I thought Day 2, “He Disciplines His People,” was profound. I saw the sunny side of trials and was encouraged. I especially loved the writing of our friend, Charles Haddon Spurgeon —

May your character not be a writing upon the sand, but an inscription upon the rock…It is of no use to hope that we shall be well rooted if no rough winds pass over us. Those old gnarlings on the root of the oak tree, and those strange twistings of the branches, all tell of the many storms that have swept over it, and they are also indicators of the depth into which the roots have forced their way. So the Christian is made strong, and firmly rooted by all the trials and storms of life. Shrink not then from the tempestuous winds of trial, but take comfort, believing that by their rough discipline God is fulfilling this benediction to you.
Charles Haddon Spurgeon in One Holy Passion

I have discovered as I have studied One Holy Passion together with you that there is a cumulative effect as I live in God’s Word day by day in this study. It seems like suddenly I have come to a firm conclusion that is more resolute than ever before: God loves me! Of course, I have known He loves me since my mother and my grandmother taught me about Him when I was very young. But now I know more than before how very much He loves me and desires and intimate relationship. This knowledge serves to motivate me to take time alone with Him to know and love Him even more.

So dear friend, what have you been learning as we near the end of this sacred journey in Exodus? Are you experiencing God’s amazing love in a new and deeper way?

Be sure to share what God is teaching you as you have lived in His Word in Week 7 in our One Holy Passion study. You can write your thoughts in the Comments section of this post.

O Holy Savior, make my life deeper, stronger, richer, gentler, more Christlike, more full of the spirit of heaven, more devoted to your service and glory, so that I may ever bless and praise you, and magnify your name and adorn your Gospel in all things. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

And now, let’s continue on in this sacred journey of One Holy Passion. We have only one more glorious week together in this study!

♥ God bless you as you continue this great adventure of knowing Him!

Sola Scriptura

In this seventh week of study, you have gone deeper in your journey in Exodus with Moses and the people of Israel to God’s amazing love. We are now catching a glimpse of God’s heart in new ways. We are seeing that He is all grace, and that He disciplines His people. We are learning what it means to have a face to face relationship with Him, how He wants no rival love and desires us to serve Him. How did this week of study encourage you to know and love God more? What meant the most to you the most about the heart of God? What day of study meant the most to you this week and why? What was your favorite quote, insight, or verse? How has God revealed Himself to you this week? What is God teaching you?

Your Assignment

Your assignment this next week is to study Week 8, Days 1-7, Into The Promised Land from One Holy Passion — A Sacred Journey in Exodus to God’s Amazing Love. At the end of Week Eight, you may also want to enjoy the companion Week Eight message for One Holy Passion (Viewer Guide, pp287-288) — Living In The Promised Land – Digital M4V Video or Living In The Promised Land – Digital MP3 Audio. In our eighth week of study as we complete this sacred journey with the Lord, we are going to see how Moses, Joshua, and the children of Israel experienced the promised land. And then, we are going to learn how we can experience the promised land even now. And finally, we will look at our wonderful hope, the hope of heaven and eternal life. I will meet you back here with one final post and discussion question on Saturday, December 16, 2017.

Getting The Most Out Of Your Study

Grab your Bible and One Holy Passion and draw near to the Lord. Give yourself lots of time with the Lord. And make it a special time just for you and your Lord. You may want to set out your quiet time basket and fill it with quiet time materials including colored pencils, micron pens, devotionals, your Bible, One Holy Passion, and your journal or notebook. If you have extra time, you may want to create an art journal and make pages of collage and art with all that you are learning. You may want to take extra time to write in The Quiet Time Journal or The Quiet Time Notebook. If I ever find myself rushing in my quiet time with the Lord, then I always stop, take a deep breath, and remember God’s invitation, “Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). I’m excited to be able to share this journey with you over the next 8 weeks. I want all of us to keep an eye and ear open for what God has to say to us as we live in His Word. And then, let’s be open and willing to share what God teaches us. And let’s pray for one another.

One Holy Passion — A Quiet Time Experience

For you are a holy people to the Lord your God; the Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for His own possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. The Lord did not set His love on you nor choose you because you were more in number than any of the peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples, but because the Lord loved you … — Deuteronomy 7:6-8

It is one thing to talk about the greatness of God’s love, but quite another to experience His love firsthand in your own life. Spending quality quiet time in Exodus is the key; God is going to transform you by changing the way you think. Through my own sacred journey in Exodus, I experienced a divine rescue at the Red Sea Place, and I found the way through and the way out. God rescues us so we can know, love, and serve Him. Oh yes, God is greater than anything you are experiencing right now. And He loves you with passion, power, and purpose. One holy passion.

Again, you hit the nail on the head! … I should not look back to Egypt, nor to what others are doing. … Thanks for the bountiful lessons we learn from you, and putting those lessons together with pictures, is an added treat.

Once I start reading one of your books, I can hardly put it aside to do something else.
