The Promise Of Eternity — Part 2

Have you ever stood on the dock of a harbor, and looked out at the vast array of boats rocking back and forth in the water? As the waves ripple, the boats move. But they don’t drift far from where they are because they are anchored. Only if the anchor is not firmly in the ground will the boats drift with the move of the water. And so it is with us. When we are firmly anchored in the Word of God, the eternal perspective gives us hope that anchors our soul. Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount that a person who hears His words and acts on them is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. “The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock” (Matthew 7:25). The writer of Hebrews speaks of how God never lies, so we can hold firmly to the hope we have. And oh, how amazing our hope really is. Our hope is “an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast” (Hebrews 6:17-19).

This week, in Part 2 of The Promise of Eternity in A Heart To See Forever — Embrace the Promise of the Eternal Perspective, we focus on the power of the eternal perspective to give us hope. We saw in Week 1, Days 4-7 where our hope can be found and how great our God really is. I loved the encouragement of these words on page 41:

Those with the deepest despairs can know the greatest hopes. When we say hope, we are not talking about a querulous wishing that may or may not come true. Biblical hope is based on the steadfast promise of God and the trustworthiness of His character. It is a firm assurance of what is true. The hope that God wants to give you is based on the promises in His Word and will serve as the anchor of your soul. Every time God gives you a promise in the Word, there is one more tether of your soul to the firm foundation of the eternal, and it expands the ground of your hope. It is God’s Word that allows your to smile even when your life is falling apart. There is so much you can know is true because of what God says. And what God says will give you a great hope.

Those words provide a tremendous motivation and encouragement to open the pages of my Bible every day. I want to be anchored no matter what storm comes my way. I am looking for promises*** in God’s Word and keeping track of them in my personal Quiet Time Notebook. My promise for the week is Philippians 4:6-7 (NLT): Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
