When the first in the series of Star Wars movies was released, people were mesmerized by the special effects, the unusual-looking creatures, and the movement through space and time. I remember sitting in the audience and at the end of the movie, everyone stood and cheered. They had never seen anything like it. They must never have read the book of Revelation, because Star Wars is nothing compared to what is to come as history is brought to a close and the new heaven and earth are ushered in to eternity.
In Week 6, Days 4-7 of A Heart To See Forever, “The Battle For Eternity,” we studied Revelation 6-12. In these chapters, we read about the different events that occur as the Lamb removes seals from a book. And thus begins the 7 year tribulation spoken of by more than one prophet, and specifically in Daniel 9:24-27. Interestingly, there is no mention of the church in the events of Revelation 4-19 and may likely point to the pre-tribulation rapture of the church. In our study of Revelation 6-12 we had the opportunity to look at the characters and events that occur. The timing of Revelation 6-12 is most likely the first 3 1/2 years of the terrifying time that will try the whole world known as the tribulation. It begins with the signing of a seven year covenant between Israel and the antichrist (Daniel 9:27). During the tribulation the earth will be shaken, and more than half of the earth’s population will die through catastrophic events. Revelation 12 gives us a picture of spiritual warfare where we see Satan as the red dragon. His attack will increase to horrific proportions in the last 3 1/2 years known as the Great Tribulation.
The Bible is clear that we do have an enemy. We learn from 1 Peter 5:8 that our enemy, “the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” His time is short and we know that “greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.” Now is our time of opportunity to tell others about Christ and give them the opportunity to hear the gospel and be saved. I think the message for us is that we need to maximize the time we’ve been given during our brief stay on earth. No matter how difficult our life, we can still tell others about Jesus with our words and our witness. We need to stand firm on the strong ground of Christ and His Word.
I love these words by Martin Luther in Day 5 of Week 6 in A Heart To See Forever this week:
The purpose of the devil is to attack the Word of God and destroy our faith. We should not be surprised by the rise of false teachers and heretics. When God’s holy Word arises, it is always its lot that Satan opposes it with all his might. At first, he rages against it with force and wicked power. If that promises no success, he attacks it with false tongues and erring spirits and teachers. What he is unable to crush by force he seeks to suppress by cunning and lies. This was his strategy at the beginning. When the Gospel first came into the world, he launched a mighty attack against it through Jews and Gentiles, shed much blood, and filled Christendom with martyrs. When this did not succeed, he raised false prophets and erring spirits and filled the world with heretics… And we must be prepared for this, and by no means allow it to disturb us, for so it must be, as Paul tells the Corinthians: There must also be heresies among you that they which are approved may be made manifest (1 Corinthians 11:19). We must stand firmly upon the Word of God. All the cunning of the devil is exercised in trying to tear us away from the Word. If in the external preaching he does not succeed in making people unwilling to hear the Word, yet he succeeds in the heart by persuading them not to cling to it.
Dear friend, ask the Lord to give you eyes to see the opportunities He’s given you even now to share Him with others. Stand strong in Him, hold firmly to His Word, and look for Him to come at any time.
When you finish Week 6, Days 4-5, think about all you have learned this week. How does understanding what is to come motivate you to serve the Lord faithfully in the present? Hi, Catherine. This study is so incredibly rich. I would love to be able to stop by your blog here more frequently to share what God has been teaching me, but time won’t allow it.
I loved the quote by Dr. LaHaye on page 211 that reminds me that the true purpose of the Tribulation period is “a divine expresssion of His mercy and grace…God will go tot he most extreme measures in all of history during the final days of man’s life on earth to bring a massive number of souls to faith in Him so multitudes of people may enjoy the blessings He has prepared for their eternal future.:”
This quote reminds me that all of these impossibly awful things are for the express purpose of drawing men to Himself. God is wooing us all and will continue to woo throughout the Tribulation. He wants our grip loosened from everything and anything that we might clasp tightly to Him alone, that he might be the first Love of each and every human on the planet.
