Paths lead us to many different places. There is a path that leads to God. The path we take is a Person – Jesus Christ.
Life is all about Jesus. This truth is plain and simple, yet many miss it. Even we miss it sometimes. Every day, we have a choice to draw near and stay close to Jesus, walking with Him moment by moment. For some of us, we get off the path with our Lord trying to handle life without Him. And then, when it all becomes too much, we run frantically back, and cry out desperately for help. Others drift away, often imperceptibly at first, but later the distance from our Lord is greater than we could have imagined.
So what must we do to stay on the path, close to our Lord Jesus, day by day and moment by moment? I have an Old Testament verse and a New Testament verse that show us the way. God told Israel, through Jeremiah, to “stand by the ways and see and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is, and walk in it; and you will find rest for your souls” (Jeremiah 6:16). Jesus said, “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30).
The real secret is to remain in Jesus. Jesus told us this Himself. He said:
These words are so powerful. Jesus is telling us not to leave Him, but stay, remain, abide, live, dwell in Him. That must mean our hearts are prone to wander. Let’s be cognizant of our inclination to run the other way, and stay close to Him, no matter what.
I had this opportunity just last week in one emergency situation I had to handle. I experienced feelings of fear, even panic. But in the midst of it all, I stopped, and took my situation to Jesus. I poured out my heart. I asked Him to help me respond with wisdom. And I prayed that He would work out everything. After praying, I made the phone calls to doctors, and ultimately, the emergency was resolved in ways I could have never imagined. I experienced a supernatural rest. And the difficulty was gone within one day. It doesn’t always work that way. Sometimes our challenges in life are longer. But still the path is the same. Stay close to Jesus. Come to Him. He will give you everything you need to make it through, one step at a time. Don’t try to handle it yourself. Ask Him for everything you need. And though this seems simple, let’s not miss it.
During a recent photoshoot in Sedona, Arizona, I had the opportunity to take the Upper Red Rock Loop road, and go to Red Rock State Park. At the beginning of the path, you can see what’s ahead – Cathedral Rock, one of the most beautiful sites in Sedona. The path leads by the water, has some bumps and rocky ground, but offers magnificent views all along the way. And that’s how it is when we stay close to our Lord. Even though we may go through turbulent storms, our destination is clear, and we are given strength and power to move on along the path. And the Lord gives us magnificent views of His character and His ways in life.
So today, dear friend, remain in Jesus, and watch Him as He produces amazing fruit in your life.
