Pilgrimage OLS — Introduction Week
And now our journey begins as we live in some of my very favorite Psalms in Pilgrimage of the Heart. I love the Psalms and have found much encouragement and comfort from the Lord when I live in that section of Scripture. In fact, I often begin my daily quiet time in the Psalms. Over the years, I’ve collected many commentaries on the Psalms, and sometimes I will just focus on one Psalm for a long period of time. When I savor every word and phrase, I am allowing God’s Word to make its way into my heart. And that’s what I want to talk about in our introduction to Pilgrimage of the Heart – the importance of spending time in God’s Word.
In Psalm 1, the gateway to the entire book of Psalms, the writer contrasts two kinds of people – the blessed person and the wicked. And there is one main quality that separates the two – how the blessed man handles the Word of God. He loves it and he lives in it. Think long and hard about these words:
As you begin your journey in Pilgrimage of the Heart, I want to encourage you to love the Word and live in the Word. There are many reasons to love the Word – in it you will see Jesus (John 5:39-40), you will experience hope (Romans 15:4), you will be revived (Psalm 119:50), and you will be transformed (Hebrews 4:12). As you study God’s Word, I encourage you to linger long and live in every verse, phrase. Pilgrimage of the Heart will give you ample opportunity to go to many different places in Scripture. Don’t hurry. Take your time. And ask God to speak to you. Let the word of Christ richly dwell in you (Colossians 3:16). As a result, you will find yourself becoming steadfast and strong in the Lord, like that tree planted by streams of water. Then, when the storms come, you may be blown about, but you will not give up. No, instead, you will grow and become intimate with your Lord.
We begin the adventure with the Introduction, writing your Letter to the Lord, and Week 1, Days 1-3.
