Our Daily Walk

Every day we walk. From here to there. Going from one place to another. Moving from one room at work or home to another. Through one trial and perhaps facing another new challenge.

God tells us how to walk.

Therefore, being always of good courage, and knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord for we walk by faith, not by sight.
2 Corinthians 5:6-7

That means as we move about through life, from here to there, through trials and challenges, we take in and respond to truths that are unseen by the physical eye, yet very clear and real to the spiritual eye. Those truths, including promises, commands, encouragements, and facts are found in God’s word. We open God’s Word so we can walk by faith, not by sight. If we never look at the unseen, then we will walk by sight. Walking by faith enables us to live above the circumstances, unshaken, and able to walk well. Walking by sight cripples us in many ways, and often leads to despair and discouragement.

How’s your walk these days? Maybe you’re thinking, “But Catherine, you have no idea of how difficult my life is right now. It’s impossible to walk by faith.” I would say a big yes to that! With us it’s impossible, but with God all things are possible. We cannot walk by faith in our own strength. Faith is given and grown by Jesus Himself (Hebrews 12:2), and is nurtured and empowered by the Holy Spirit, Who indwells us (Acts 1:8). We “walk by the Spirit” (Galatians 5:16).

I was out shooting some photos the other day and I saw this great white heron walking proudly with determination and purpose on the other side of this pond. I got several different shots of him walking, but this was my favorite. He was determined and intentional about his direction, and one foot is up, ready to take the next step. And he was walking on a different plane altogether – above the waves and water below. I think that’s what the Lord wants with us – purpose, intention, steadfast determination, and ready to take the next step by faith. Our daily faith walk enables us to live above our circumstances, unshaken, able to endure through the pain, and continue on in our pilgrimage with the Lord.

Paul encourages us to “walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might, for the attaining of all steadfastness and patience; joyously giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in Light” (Colossians 1:10-12). When we walk by faith, we walk in that manner worthy of the Lord that Paul is talking about. And the benefits are incredible – fruit, intimacy with God, strength and power, steadfastness, patience, joy, thanksgiving, and hope of our incredible future with the Lord as His saint.

So today, may we all walk by faith in God’s unchangeable Word, wherever we go, whatever we experience.
