Forever OLS — Week Three #2

Life is not always easy. In fact, sometimes the circumstances can be downright overwhelming.

I wonder if I have a hearty amen from someone reading this today. Believe me, I have had moments where I just had to stop in my tracks to keep from falling into despair. In those times, I have had to literally run into the presence of God and ask Him to help me. I have found Jesus to be my great encourager in the hard times. Jesus knows the trials you face, and He is your strength in times of trouble. According to Hebrews 2:18, “since He Himself was tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted.” One of the ways He has encouraged me is through His Word. He never fails to give me that one promise or powerful truth in Scripture to revive my heart and restore my soul.

The Bible is a book of hope for the overwhelmed, an encouragement for the oppressed, and a comfort for the broken heart.

This week in Part 2, The Message Of Eternity, A Heart To See Forever, in Revelation 2-3, we studied the warnings and the rewards from Jesus for His beloved church. What stood out to me the most was Jesus’ encouragement to each of the churches to overcome. I learn here that it is possible to overcome no matter what I face in life. I can gain the victory through Christ, who IS the Overcomer in my life. I may be weak but He is strong. I believe if we would be overcomers, we need to live by faith (2 Corinthians 5:7), be filled with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18), draw near to God (James 5:8), lay aside sin and fix our eyes on Jesus (Hebrews 12:1-2), study God’s Word (2 Timothy 2:15), and pray (Philippians 4:6-7). Now, that’s just the beginning of all that God’s Word teaches us and gives us to help us overcome in difficulties.

When you need words from God that will encourage you to overcome in whatever you are enduring today, then turn to the Bible. You will find exactly what you need.

Its sweetest messages are to those who have fallen. It is the book of love and sympathy. It is like a mother’s bosom to lay one’s head upon in the time of distress or pain. Its pages teem with cheer for those who are discouraged. It sets its lamps of hope to shine in darkened chambers. It reaches out its hands of help to the fainting and to those who have fallen. It is full of comfort for those who are in sorrow. It has its many special promises for the needy, the poor, and the bereft. It is a book for those who have failed, for the disappointed, the defeated, and the discouraged. It is this quality in the Bible that makes it so dear to the heart of humanity. If it were a book only for the strong, the successful, the victorious, the unfallen, those who have no sorrow, who never fail – the whole, the happy – it would not find such a welcome wherever it goes in the world. So long as there are tears and sorrows, and broken hearts, and crushed hopes, and human failures, and lives burdened and bowed down, and spirits sad and despairing, so long will the Bible be a good book believed in as God – an inspired book, and full of inspiration, light, help, and strength for earth’s weary ones.
J.R. Miller, The Every Day of Life, About The Bible

Don’t those words challenge you to grab your Bible and live there awhile? If you need a new hope in life, just sit with the Lord in His Word. He will give you that one promise that will help you move on in all that God has called you to in life. As I said in Day 5: “There is that moment in the midst of the trial when you move from fear to faith, when your soul has latched on to that one bright promise that propels you forward and enables you to overcome. The only way that you can make it is by the overcoming Spirit of Christ within. He has overcome and so can you.”

So, dear friend, I pray that we will all be overcomers and rely on Jesus as our strength and hope in every trial. Overcomers are rewarded by Jesus with special treasures — like a new name, authority over nations, white garments, sitting down with Jesus on His throne, and so much more.

♥ God bless you as you continue this great adventure of knowing Him!

When you finish Week 3, Days 4-7, will you share how these letters to the churches of western Asia Minor impacted your life? What challenges that faced the church are your greatest challenges? Where do you need to overcome? How has the Lord helped you overcome?

Luke 5:16 NASB — But Jesus Himself would often slip away to the wilderness and pray.
A Heart To See Forever has been an incredible study. … God has given me so much to ponder and the time to meander through His Word. … I find that Catherine’s studies are so thought-provoking and give me the opportunity to spend time with the Lord in ways that I have never done before. There are so many places within each day’s session where I can stop, ponder, pray, journal and return to or go on ahead. For the first time, I actually want to do a study over again.

A Heart to See Forever was my first real Bible study. Studying the revelation of the glorious new heaven and new earth motivated me to turn back to Genesis and begin an in depth study from there. With this perspective, I can see every book [of the Bible] through the lens of eternity.
