Forever OLS — Week Five

Have you ever experienced a trial so overwhelming that you can’t seem to get beyond it?

The darkness obscures your vision and you find yourself plummeting into despair. Friend, take courage. Just when you think it’s over, it’s not over. What you need is a new view. Learn to look up and gain the eternal perspective. That is the message of Revelation to seven struggling churches in western Asia Minor. The Lord gave the Revelation so they could gain an exalted glorious view of Him, a new view of themselves, and understand the rest of the story. There really is a happy ending for all who know the Lord Jesus Christ. He wins and we live “happily ever after” in heaven, face to face with our Lord. It is the best of all hopes we could possibly have, and the hope is ours in Christ.

This week in The Reign and Rule of Eternity, A Heart To See Forever, in Revelation 4-5, our view moves from earth to heaven, right into the throne room of God. As we “look up” and gain an eternal view, we learn immediately that God is on the throne, He is holy, He has a plan, and He hears our prayers. When we are in a trial, these truths are the promises we often doubt, and surely need firm assurance of in the dark night of the soul.

Friend, learn to “look up” in every circumstance of life. Say with the psalmist, “I will lift up my eyes to the mountains; from where shall my help come? My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth” (Psalm 121:1-2). If you find yourself drowning in discouragement, then grab your Bible, find a quiet corner somewhere, and live in the rich treasures of God’s Word. You may wonder, “Where do I begin?” in opening the pages of the Word. A study like A Heart To See Forever is good place to encourage you to live in the Word. You will be guided into rich, meaty passages of Scripture where you can linger long and lift your gaze from earth to heaven. Every page in the Bible has doors open to heaven where you will gain a new view of God—who He is, what He does, and what He says.

Rather than holding on to despair that comes from what you see and feel, why not let that go in order to hold on to the eternal that comes by the Holy Spirit through the truths found in the Word of God? There are powerful truths that you are going to discover in the days to come that will carry you through as long as you hold on to them by faith: truths such as God is in control and God has a plan for your life. These are things that just don’t appear to be true when all is dark. You may find that letting go of despair is difficult. But you must relinquish despair even when the truths of God seem unbelievable in the face of what is going on in your life.

Learn to look up and linger long, dear friend. Practice looking up and lingering long and you will find the Word of God becoming more and more precious to you. You will remember verses at just the right time because they have become embedded in your heart and mind. And you will find hope flooding your soul, for it is “through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope” (Romans 15:4).

♥ God bless you as you continue this great adventure of knowing Him!

When you finish Week 5, think about all you have learned this week — God is on the throne, He is holy, He has a plan for your life, and He hears your prayers. How does looking up and learning these truths encourage you right now?

Luke 5:16 NASB — But Jesus Himself would often slip away to the wilderness and pray.
A Heart To See Forever has been an incredible study. … God has given me so much to ponder and the time to meander through His Word. … I find that Catherine’s studies are so thought-provoking and give me the opportunity to spend time with the Lord in ways that I have never done before. There are so many places within each day’s session where I can stop, ponder, pray, journal and return to or go on ahead. For the first time, I actually want to do a study over again.

A Heart to See Forever was my first real Bible study. Studying the revelation of the glorious new heaven and new earth motivated me to turn back to Genesis and begin an in depth study from there. With this perspective, I can see every book [of the Bible] through the lens of eternity.
