Secure

Secure. Safe. Untouchable.

Free from care and without anxiety.

Don’t you long for such an existence?

Jesus said,

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life…look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?
Matthew 6:25-27 NIV

Oh those words from Jesus – they are groundbreaking for any person who is struggling with any difficult circumstance, wrestling with worry, and longing for a deeper faith. If Jesus said it, you can count on His words for your life.

Look at this bird. Sitting in the tree. Safe and secure, it looks on, apparently unmoved by what we cannot see in this photo. In the west, billows of dark fire-filled smoke are rolling in to the desert from a nearby mountain brush fire. And this bird sits alone, but unafraid, happily enjoying the refuge of its favorite tree. I know this bird loves this tree because I see it often as I walk out of my office. This red vermillion flycatcher has found a place where it is safe and secure.

And we must do the same. Our safety and our security is only in one place – the Lord Himself. Try to find your freedom from care and concern anywhere else, and you will be disappointed. For only the Lord gives peace. He is the One who holds you close in a time of trouble and saves you when you are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18).

David learned the secret of a secure life: “Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun. Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him” (Psalm 37:3-7 NIV).

So today, choose trust, dwelling in the land of safety in the refuge of your Lord, and commit your way to the Lord. Then watch to see what He will do as you are still before Him, waiting patiently as He weaves together every strand of your life for His glory.
