Brainstorming With The Lord

This past weekend I drove to Phoenix to visit family.

I always look forward to the four hour drive because I love the think time it affords me. It’s like an extended quiet time with the Lord.

Certain ideas take time to percolate; concentrated think time often brings the details together into a solid plan.

During my drive, three new book ideas finally came together in my mind. The Lord and I brainstormed together and I even know some of the chapters I’ll write. I actually pulled in to a truck stop to write out all the ideas. I loved this powerful planning time with the Lord.

The writer of Proverbs aptly says,

In his heart a man plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps.
Proverbs 16:9

Staying in tune with God is a moment-by-moment journey with the Lord. However, I believe it really begins in our daily quiet time with Him. We are to abide in Christ, for He is the vine. As we abide, we are nourished with everything we need for everything we face in life. I believe part of the lifeblood flowing into us as branches includes those ideas that eventually become part of our ministry. All the ideas I’ve ever had for books and messages have begun in my quiet time. A verse may spark a life-changing insight and eventually grow into a book.

I’ll never forget reading Psalm 84:5, “Blessed are those whose strength is in you, who have set their hearts on pilgrimage.” The word pilgrimage literally jumped off the page and found a firm place in my heart. I realized I’m a pilgrim on a pilgrimage and my home is in the Lord. I began living in the Psalms and eventually wrote my very first book, Pilgrimage of the Heart.

I encourage you to always have a notepad available – even better an iPhone with a Voice Memos App – because you never know when the Lord is going to give you these incredible ideas. Brainstorming with the Lord is very exciting! I also carry one of those small Moleskine® notebooks in my purse and fill it with countless ideas. Then, in my quiet time, I use The Quiet Time Notebook for all my insights, observations, and miscellaneous ideas. Three other tools I’ve found helpful for planning and brainstorming on my computer are Inspiration Pro, Mindmanager, and Evernote. Evernote also has an app that I use on my iPad for brainstorming ideas.

And then, after all the planning and praying, I depend on the Lord to show me how to put those ideas into action.

So always look for new things from Quiet Time Ministries in the future as I continue to brainstorm ideas from the Lord and answer the call of Jesus, “Follow Me and I will make you fishers of men” (Matthew 4:19) and “Go and make disciples of all nations…” (Matthew 28:18-20).

I love how you brainstorm with the Lord and how all the ideas begin with Him in you quiet time! You have a wonderful gift of writing and I am so bless that you use it! Your writings minister to me in a big way!

Thanks for those encouraging words Nita! The Lord really does give the best ideas and it gets exciting to see how He develops them as we are faithful to say “Yes, Lord” and watch to see what He will accomplish.

♥ God bless you in the great adventure of knowing Him!
