Well, according to Scripture,'You' is a group! After all, during your quiet time, you pray to the Father [Luke 11:1-2 NASB], in the name of the Son [Romans 1:9 NKJV], with the inspiration of the Holy Spirit [Jude 1:20 NASB].
Quiet Time Ministries is especially dedicated to 'teaching devotion to God and His Word' through small groups [Hebrews 10:22-25]:
You and a friend!
You and your spouse!
You and your next door neighbors!
Your family and the family across town!

What's It All About?... by Catherine Martin
What is the meaning and purpose of life?
Soon after I got married, I began hearing stories about a colorful character in my husband's family: his grandfather, a physician whom everyone lovingly called 'Doctor.' Unfortunately, Doctor died many years ago, so I never got to meet him face to face. However, I feel like I know him because of all the great stories I've heard about him. Here was a man who was born only 30 years after the Civil War, delivered babies in the era of horse and buggy in the hills of Western Maryland, became an expert eye and ear surgeon, and later became president of his own state medical association. He lived to see automobiles and men land on the moon. He was enamored with ideas, fascinated with people, and moved easily with the passage of time. His favorite thing to do was sit at the dinner table with his children and grandchildren and have a wonderful conversation. Then, when the food was cleared from the table and everyone was satisfied, he would lean back in his chair, put his hands behind his head, survey the group before him, and throw out the question: What's it all about?
What's it all about? That is the universal question of all time, isn't it? What did Doctor really mean when he asked that question? I think He was really asking these profound questions.
What's [life] all about?
What is the meaning of life?
What is the purpose of life?
What is the great fulfillment of life?
I know that, even if only for a brief moment, each one of you has asked this same question: What is life all about?
How would you answer this question?
Statistics show that three of every five adults believe the main purpose in life is enjoyment and personal fulfilment. The same survey reveals that fifty-percent of "born-again" Christians also believe enjoyment and personal fulfillment is the main purpose in life. And that is an enjoyment and fulfillment apart from anything that includes God.
What these statistics tell us is that people are pursuing the answer to this vital question in many ways: money, success, materialism, self-satisfaction, pleasure . . . even through the institution of religion.
And yet, there remains a deep, unsatisfied yearning in the heart.
Henry David Thoreau has said, along with other philosophers, that most people live lives of quiet desperation.
Even in affluent "Downtown, USA," it is possible to see people with placards that say: "No job. No food. No hope."
Statistics demonstrate that every day 65 people are murdered in the United States. Annually, nearly five million individuals are victims of violent crime - a figure that has increased 531% since 1960.
Adolescents, the elderly, and the seriously ill are resorting to suicide. A book of instructions on how to perform this desperate act has made it to the bestseller list. An article in the L.A. Times highlighted a suicide pact between two fourteen year-old girls who took their lives at the same time. Their suicide message read: 'Don't forget us. We won't forget you. We just couldn't handle life anymore.'
From these statistics you can see that we are living in perilous times. And in spite of our many pursuits, we are experiencing a crisis of the heart.
This crisis of the heart is producing a loss of hope, an attitude of futility and restlessness, and a sense of aloneness.
What is life all about?
I believe we ask this question because we are created beings who are designed to ask in order to find the answer. We have been created to discover the meaning, purpose, and fulfillment of life.
I, myself, experienced aloneness, emptiness, hopelessness, and restlessness early on in my life. In my childhood, and throughout high school, I was filled with a great hunger for acceptance. Because my mother taught at my grade school, the kids would laugh at me and make fun of me - not to my face always - but I heard them behind my back. Rejection is a cruel thing, and it creates a deep loneliness. I always felt like I was on the outside looking in. I believed in God - but I did not think He was a personal God - that I could actually have a relationship with Him. And yet I hungered for someone who would love me with great abandonment, one who had my best interests at heart, and one who would never leave me nor forsake me.
And so the great question lingered in my heart - What's it all about?
In high school I became a cheerleader, probably the most popular group on the campus. But I still felt like I was on the outside looking in. There was a sense of loneliness that was not satisfied no matter how many friends I had.
During that time one of my friends told me that God wanted to have a personal relationship with me. She said that Jesus had come to earth and died on the cross just for me, and that I could pray and ask Jesus Christ into my heart, and that He would forgive my sins and be with me forever. She said that He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and that I could not get to know God except through Him. I was amazed. The very idea that God was interested in me was astounding. But I was not ready to hand my life over to someone, if I thought he might want to ruin my life.
In college, my goal in life was to have fun. But I was still looking for the answer to the question: What's it all about? And I could not get Jesus' statement out of my mind: "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, but through Me."
One day, at the end of my third year in college, I decided to confront Jesus' statement, deal with it, and make a decision. I knew that eventually I would have to deal with this statement that was relevant to my life. Jesus was basically saying He is the only way to God. He was making an exclusive claim. He was saying He is the truth. He was saying that to follow any other way of life including the 'eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow you die' philosophy, was to live a lie. Jesus was saying He is the life - not money, not success, not enjoyment - but He is the life.
Jesus' claim pierces the heart of our question: What's it all about?
If Jesus' claim is true, then:
God exists.
God desires a relationship with you and me.
Through Jesus, we may have a relationship with God.
Through our relationship with God, we may have life itself - meaning, purpose, and fulfillment.
Josephus, a Jewish historian, devoted considerable space in his massive history of Israel to bring to light a fact of history:
2000 years ago, an amazing Person lived in the area of Jerusalem - and this man's name was Jesus. He performed amazing miracles. He amazed all who came into contact with Him. He would touch someone who was paralyzed - and that person would walk. He would look into the eyes of a prostitute, and as tears came to her eyes, she would be filled with a desire to be good, holy and righteous. And He made an amazing claim - He claimed to be God! While people from all over Galilee flocked to be with Him, the religious leaders plotted to kill Him - not because of what He did - but because of who He claimed to be!
Larry King, the CNN talk show host, was once asked who he would choose if he could interview one person throughout history. He replied that he would like to interview Jesus Christ and that he would ask him one question: 'Are you indeed virgin born?' "The answer to that question," said King, "would explain history to me."
Could it be that, indeed, God has visited us on earth - that Jesus is indeed God? If so, why?
Suppose with me that there is a God who is Creator. One who created the heavens, the earth, and you and me.
And just suppose that He created human beings, you and me, for a purpose. And that purpose was simple: He wanted a love relationship with them: you and me.
And suppose that, in the beginning, the love relationship flourished. That when God created the first human beings, the relationship was idyllic, and the fellowship - the exchange of love between God and His creation - was perfect.
Within that idyllic existence boundaries existed, set up by God Himself, to allow for this love relationship to thrive. The boundaries were basic: God's creation was not to exist independently of Him, but was to be dependent upon Him as the source of everything.
And then one day, God's human beings crossed those boundaries. They decided on their own, with the help of one whose purpose was to destroy their relationship with God, to make a choice that was independent and directly against what God had commanded.
Once the human beings had crossed that boundary, sin entered the world. Now suppose with me, that when sin entered the world, the love relationship with God was affected: sin separated the human beings from a holy God, and they could no longer enjoy this intimate fellowship with Him for which they were designed.
This sin created a great, uncrossable chasm between man and God that affected all of mankind.
The Bible says that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and that the sentence or penalty for sin is death (Roman 3:23, 6:23).
Now let us suppose again that God saw the inability of man to reach Him because of sin. He knew that it was impossible for man to reach Him, and so He reached down to man, and determined to pay the penalty for sin Himself.
Yes, Jesus claimed to be God. And, it is a fact of history that the Jews arrested Jesus at night, secretly tried Him, and publicly crucified Him on a cross.
While Jesus was on the cross, His followers mourned and His disciples fled, fearing for their own lives. His death devastated those who knew and loved Him.
Three days later, something happened - something that Jesus had said would happen.
Josephus, the Jewish historian, once again tells us that after three days, Jesus rose from the dead. He appeared to his disciples and more than 500 other people.
Jesus is who He claimed to be: God has spoken in Jesus.
That morning, at the end of my third year in college, it was as though the Lord met me face to face. I realized that if Jesus is the truth, then to live for anything or anyone else is to live for a lie. I thought through the life of Christ, His claims, and His resurrection from the dead. It would have taken more faith for me to reject the words of Christ than to accept them.
And so, I handed over the reins of my life to Jesus. I bowed my head there in my bedroom, asked for forgiveness, and asked Him to take over my life. At that moment, I entered into a love relationship with God. This was the love relationship I had been created for, and had longed for, all along.
Once I surrendered my life to the Lord Jesus, my life moved from a journey to an adventure: the great adventure of knowing God.
And that is what life is all about!
The best way for me to describe it is that I was surprised by His love.
He surprised me with His Presence in my life. When you turn to God, He makes His home in your heart. As a result, you are never alone.
He surprised me with His forgiveness. Because all my sins had been paid for by Jesus Christ on the cross, all my sins (past, present, and future) were forgiven. Do you know what that meant to me? A new life. A new beginning. A new hope. No matter how great your sin, Jesus and His forgiveness is greater.
He surprised me with His words to me. Once I made this decision, I went to a bookstore and bought a Bible. My roommates couldn't believe it. I was the last person they ever thought would read a Bible. But I started reading it - and as I did, I discovered God had a lot to say to me about myself, others, and life. I discovered that God reveals Himself and His ways as hidden treasure when we read the Bible. I began having a quiet time - spending time alone with God every day, reading His Word, and talking to Him. I discovered a life I never knew existed - a life lived daily in the presence of God. And my time alone with God every day has become a great adventure. My quiet time is where I have come to know God deeply, understand His character, and grow in intimacy with Him.
Through the years since I have made that decision, God has surprised me with many personal demonstrations of His love. The healing of relationships. The gift of my wonderful husband. And meeting wonderful people through my ministry. There has been comfort in trials, and joy, even in sorrow.
God takes people like you and me and He reaches down and gives us His great love.
Life is not easy. We have many disappointments. Sometimes we feel stressed out, burned out, and tired out.
But Jesus can walk every step of the way with us. Walking with Him through life turns disappointments into God's appointments. And He can fill our life with a sense of joy and adventure every day, as we grow to know Him more and more.
I know that one day, when I die, I will look into the eyes of the One who has walked through life with me, giving me love, joy, and strength. Then I will see Him face to face and spend eternity with Him. Security for the present and hope for the future.
Where are you in this great adventure of knowing God?
Maybe you are looking through your datebook, your busy schedule, and you are saying there is no room in your life for God.
Friend, you can't afford not to have God in your life. Because if you are searching for fulfillment in life through money, success, good looks, relationships, or anything less than God, then you are headed for a crisis of the heart. All those things can change with the snap of a finger.
Only God can bring ultimate meaning and fulfillment to your life.
Only God is big enough to fill the empty places of your heart.
Only God can give you true identity, and make you the person you were meant to be.
Only God can bring dignity, meaning, and significance in the midst of a depersonalized world.
Betsie and Corrie Ten Boom were arrested during WWII for hiding Jews in their home and seeing those Jews to safety. These two sisters were carted off to Ravensbruck, the dreaded concentration camp specifically designed to rob them of every kind of dignity or significance or meaning in life. It was a cruel death camp that terrorized and killed human beings every day of its operations. Listen to the words of Betsie Ten Boom as you wonder how God can bring meaning, purpose, and fulfillment to a life:
“The most important part of our task will be to tell everyone who will listen that Jesus is the only answer to the problems that are disturbing the hearts of men and nations. We shall have the right to speak because we can tell from our experience that His light is more powerful than the deepest darkness...how wonderful that the reality of His presence is greater than the reality of the hell about us."
Only God has a love for you that is greater than any love found in this world. And what does He desire from you more than anything else? Your love. You are what gives Him the greatest pleasure.
Perhaps in your heart you are saying, Yes, this is exactly what I am longing for. I would like to know God.
If I wanted to give you a gift, it wouldn't become yours with all its benefits until you actually took it. In the same way, God is offering you the gift of a relationship with Himself through Jesus Christ. This gift does not become yours until you actually receive it. To establish your relationship with God, simply turn to Him, ask Him to forgive your sins, and invite Christ into your life. That is what I did many years ago . . . and if you have never done it before, it is what you may do today.
The Bible says that as many as received Christ, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name (John 1:12).
If your heart is restless and you long to know God, you may pray this suggested prayer:
Lord Jesus, I need you. Thank you for dying on the cross for me. I ask you now to come into my life, forgive my sins, and make me the person You want me to be. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
You can know right now that because of the trustworthiness of God and His Word, He has answered your prayer. Because of this decision, you have forgiveness of sins, eternal life, and an eternal relationship with God, who will never leave you nor forsake you. (See I John 5:11-13, Hebrews 13:5).
The question is: What's it all about? What gives life meaning, purpose, and fulfillment?
The answer is: knowing God through Jesus Christ. He is the great adventure! God bless you as you begin his great adventure of knowing God.
If you have made this decision to invite Christ into your life, I have some information to help you grow in your new relationship with God.
